Nissan shows off tracked X-Trail concept in New York

Nissan has revealed a new tracked SUV concept at this week's New York motor show.

Based on the X-Trail, which is sold in the USA under the Rogue nameplate, the Trail Warrior features four tank-like tracks in place of wheels, and comes with a camouflage wrap, as well as military-style yellow glass.

The car also gets LED headlights, a winch and customised wheel arches, which have had to be modified to accommodate the car's unorthodox undercarriage.

Under the skin, however, the Trail Warrior uses the same 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine and automatic gearbox as the standard US-market car, giving it a rated output of around 170bhp and 237Nm of torque.

"This new Rogue Trail Warrior adds a new dimension to family adventures with its snow/sand tracks, gear basket, winch and camo paint," said Michael Bunce, vice-president for product planning at Nissan North America. "If you want to stand out from the crowd during a day on the slopes or the beach, this is the vehicle to take."

Although the Trail Warrior is a one-off car, it is one of several modified X-Trails at the show, each of which has been built to promote the 2017 Rogue. The updated car is now being offered with a petrol-electric hybrid powertrain, although whether this becomes available on the UK-market X-Trail remains to be seen.
